- There is a small temple in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, which is famous with a haiku (Japanese seventeen-syllable poem) composed by Issa Kobayashi who lived nearby. One of his poems, talking about a sumo match between 2 frogs, fighting for a marriage. One of them was a tiny, thinner one, and Issa naturally cheered it up as it looked like himself who had not been married until 52 years old. Well, the statue beautifully portrayed the sumo which Issa could have seen when he composed the haiku, and the number of tadpoles swimming around it was pretty shocking to me. Are they all going to be frogs? It could be super noisy around here.
緊急事態宣言下のゴールデンウィーク。徒歩圏内の本屋めぐりの他にできることと言ったら、走ることくらい笑。で、足立区の炎天寺で蛙相撲の銅像を見学して走って帰ってくるイベントを決行しました。
江戸時代後期の俳人小林一茶がこのお寺の周辺を散策し、『蝉鳴くや六月村の炎天寺』と詠んだのだとか。そんな小林一茶の『やせ蛙負けるな一茶是にあり』という句にちなんで蛙相撲の銅像↓が建立されたのは近代になってかららしいです。
これはたしかに、やせ蛙のほうを応援したくなりますなー。
同じ池には他にも蛙の銅像やら石像やらがありましたが、そのまわりを大量のオタマジャクシが悠々と泳いでました。コレ全部カエルになったら、さぞうるさかろうね笑。
汗だくでホテルに戻り付きました。5月初旬でこの暑さはどういうことだ？
